Patricia Petibon - Melancolia: Spanish Arias and Songs![]() Patricia Petibon, soprano/Orquesta Nacional de Espana/Josep Pons Label: Deutsche Grammophon Reviewed by Orest Soltykevych, host of Saturday Breakfast Here is a wonderful introduction into the soulful music of Spain and Latin America - a beautiful new CD by the French coloratura soprano Patricia Petibon, who specializes in music of the baroque and classical eras. It's a unique compilation of Spanish folk songs and opera arias, all united by a theme of melancholy - but there are also a handful of upbeat and humorous pieces. Petibon performs songs by 20th century composers Villa-Lobos, Granados, Falla and Turina, and the feature piece on the CD is a 4-movement work written especially for Petibon by contemporary French composer Nicolas Bacri. Almost all of the works are accompanied by orchestra, often including the sounds of castanets and hand clapping. In two of the pieces Petibon is accompanied by guitar and by piano. The captivating voice of Petibon, the variety of pieces and styles, and the detailed liner notes all make for a very enjoyable recording. February 17, 2012 |
