"Man From Another Time" indeed: Meet my friend Seasick
Steve, and you won't be disappointed!
Steve Gene Wold is a true hillbilly Buddha, and a musician
to boot. Somebody who can write songs like "Started Out
With Nothin, Still Got Most of it Left" surely has me
in his corner.
Man From Another Time is Seasick Steve's 4th studio
album (on Atlantic Records). From the opening "Diddley
Bo", right to the closing "Seasick Boogie",
it is a box of chocolates (even comes with a hidden track-
Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome, I Could Cry").
There is a deluxe edition of the CD available too, with extra
tracks!
I discovered Seasick Steve's music only a few years ago,
but fell in love with his jolly self right away. He ain't
just quaint, but a competent blues journeyman. He has seen
enough of life's ups and downs to be qualified to write and
sing about the subjects he writes and sings about.
There is a real joy and celebration in Seasick, and a ship
load of humor too. He calls one of his guitars "The Three-String
Trance Wonder", because it had only three strings when
he bought it (for $75); he decided not to replace the missing
strings - brilliant! He will rock out on one stringed "Diddley
Bow" too!
And he is his own rhythm section, stomping on, "The
'MDM' (Mississippi Drum Machine)" - A small wooden box
that is decorated with a Mississippi motorcycle license plate
(MC33583), and a small piece of carpet. Awesome!
If I ever took on another name, it would be Landlubber Baba...
