Here is a wild one - a bunch of songs celebrating the joys
and sorrows of cigarettes - those nasty cancer-sticks that,
amazingly, were once the epitome of 'cool' in popular culture.
And, as musicologist and compiler Hank Davis says in his
excellent sleeve notes for the CD, 'This is almost certainly
the first time that Frank Sinatra, Rev. J. M. Gates and Little
Jimmy Dickens have appeared on the same compilation'.
Hank is too right. If you like multi-genre playlists, this
disc is for you. From jazz to hellfire preaching to honky-tonk,
from doo-wop to middle-of-the-road, from rockabilly to bluegrass,
it's all here on this thirty track collection. You'll hear
good old smokin' faves like Tex Williams' 'Smoke, Smoke, Smoke
That Cigarette' and Peggy Lee's poignant 'Don't Smoke In Bed'
alongside obscure nicotine-stained artefacts like Glen Glenn's
rockin' 'One Cup Of Coffee And A Cigarette' and Lillian Leach
& The Mellows' doo-wop tinged 'Smoke From Your Cigarette'.
And, when the music's over, you'll find two bonus tracks of
vintage radio ads, extolling the virtues of various brands
of cigarettes.
As usual, Bear Family has pulled out all the stops for the
packaging of this gem. The fifty-five page, full-colour booklet
is chock-a-block full of vintage cigarette related graphics,
photos of the artists and lyrics to every tune, as well as
a mess of entertaining and informative notes from Hank Davis.
This one is custom made for fans of Roy's Record Room
and I'll be featuring the disc on the August
30th edition of RRR. Tune in then to find out
what the fuss is all about.
Oh, I should add - I helped pull together the tunes for this
collection. 'Smoke That Cigarette' definitely has a big ol'
dose of that eclectic triple-R spirit!
