CanWrite! 2008 Conference

CanWrite!

CanWrite! celebrates Canadian literature, provides an educational forum for professional and emerging writers from across Canada, and supports writers in the development and promotion of their work. The conference takes place in Edmonton, July 3-6, 2008 and features keynote addresses by Ian Ferguson (How to be a Canadian) and Ralph Keyes (The Courage to Write).

This year, choose from three streams to create the conference experience you need at whatever stage of your career:

Source sessions provide tools for mining for material, generating ideas, bringing them to the page, and giving them form and life.

Refine sessions focus on the process of revision, re-writing, editing, mentoring and finding readers for your work.

Surge sessions prepare you to move forward in the world of successful publication. It includes the business side of the creative work: agents, publishing, marketing, and pushing your work through borders of genre and geography.

Whether you swim in one stream all day, or dip back and forth, it’s all up to you. Come be inspired by CanWrite!, the 87th annual conference of the Canadian Authors Association.

CKUA's Ken Davis, host of Bookmark, will be moderator of the "Hot Trends, Hot Markets" panel at the conference.

World Quest Music Songwriting Contest 2008

The World Quest Music Songwriting Contest is a new Canadian songwriting contest that was launched on Wednesday, March 26th for the general public. Professional entries began March 17th. Everyone is eligible, any genre of music is welcome

There are cash and product prizes to be won, the contest is free of charge to the general public, and $10 for professional entries. The contest itself is open to professional and non-professional songwriters who submit entries at worldquestmusic.com. Professional and Non-Professional entries are paired off into two independently running contests. There are no musical categories in this competition, which makes this contest rather unique, there is a public voting area and a unique wild card vote by select judges.

The contest runs for five months and entrants can enter up to five songs in the Non-Professional grouping and up to ten songs in the Professional grouping. Both groupings run together, the Professional March 17 through July 26, and the Non-Professional March 26 through August 8. Contestants go head to head online where fans vote for their favorite entries. Semi-Finalists, Finalists and Grand Prize Winners are chosen based on these tallied online votes.

Alberta Music Grows Into the Future

The Alberta Recording Industries Association (ARIA) recently made changes at a Special Resolution Meeting that will benefit the music industry in Alberta. The members voted in favour that the Association will now legally be called The Alberta Music Industry Association (“Alberta Music” for short). There are also positive revisions to the Membership By-Laws; amendments in existing Full and Associate Memberships as well as the addition of Band and Student Memberships.

“These changes to ARIA’s membership will help the growth of our vibrant music industry in Alberta by being more inclusive while still maintaining a professional objective.” - Gerry Stoll, President

There have been other changes over the last year such as hiring Kennedy Jenson for the first ever full-time position as Executive Director. Kennedy brings to the table, years of experience from both the performing and business sides of the music industry. The launch of a brand new travel grant and new season of our Industry Info Series’ (previously known as Networking Nights) along with other special events being planned is only the beginning of how we plan to go forward. The excitement continues with a new office location in October, a new website under construction and a complete re-branding of the Association. Alberta Music once again is offering their half-price membership sale this Fall.

Help Support ArtsCan Circle

ArtsCan Circle was founded by Mike Stevens, a talented harmonica player, who has dedicated over 10 years of his life to this worthwhile cause. ArtsCan Circle helps youths in Northern Canada who are plagued by poverty, drug abuse, teen pregnancy and suicide. Using the incredible power of music, Arts Can Circle sends artists to perform in the far North and supplies musical instruments to these kids so they can learn to play. The results to date have been very encouraging.

As a member of Canada's musical community, ArtsCan Circle needs your help. You can donate new or used musical instruments or make a financial donation.

Most needed are guitars, basses, amps, accessories, keyboards, harmonicas, recorders, percussion instruments, recording gear, instructional books and videos.

Donations over $25.00 are tax deductible. For information on donating instruments or funds, visit artscancircle.ca.
