Royal Wood on How I Hear It

(Click on pictures to see larger view)

Royal Wood is on his way to establishing himself alongside the Canadian royalty of artists such as Sexsmith and Wainwright. – EXCLAIM MAGAZINE

Beginning on the piano at the age of four, Royal Wood became a multi-instrumentalist by his early teens. In fact, any instrument he could get his hands on was explored and devoured. His school's music program had a sign-out policy for any instrument smaller than the tympani - and they all found their way home to his bedroom. Even the drums came home for the summer months.

Last year, A Good Enough Day, Royal’s follow up to 2004’s critically acclaimed Tall Tales was released. With the new record out to critical praise in both Canada and Europe, his music in the hands of fans, successful performances at major festivals and venues all over the world, Royal Wood is an artist whose time is at hand to be heard. The Toronto-based singer/songwriter joined host Monica Miller on How I Hear It, Thursday, May 8th for an interview and live performance.

The award-winning songwriter, author and political activist is currently on tour to promote the new album and recently played a couple of shows in Alberta. He joined host Terry David Mulligan on Mulligan Stew, Saturday, March 15th.

Ben Sures on How I Hear It

Ben Sures has all the qualities that make a great performing songwriter. Since 1994 he has been making people smile with his songs and stories. As a performer he's always improvising, bringing the stories in new and often hilarious directions. The songs are image driven, taking the listener in directions they don't expect, and the melodies are strong and simple. Ben Sures was Monica Miller's guest on How I Hear It, Friday March 14th for an interview and live performance.

Susan Wheatley on Afternoon Edition

Until she stumbled upon the roots & alt-country sounds emanating from CKUA Radio, Susan Wheatley's musical world was fed by the harder side of rock. Since her musical epiphany, she has soaked up the songs and inspiration of singers like Lucinda Williams, Tom Russell, Mary Gauthier. Through them, Susan was able to unlock her stories and set them to music. Her debut disc, Beyond The Dover, addresses a turbulent time in her life with songs that speak frankly about those experiences. Taken as a whole, the album proves to be a collection of questions, answers, and observations on the road to redemption.

Susan joined host David Ward on the Afternoon Edition for a performance and interview on Friday, March 7th.

Terry Rock on Afternoon Edition

Calgary is the host city for the 2008 JUNO Awards, Canada’s premier arts and music event, from April 3-6, 2008. Along with JunoFest, the Songwriter's Circle, Juno Cup and the Juno Fan Fare, an initiative to ensure a lasting impact on Calgary's music and arts scene: Music Lives Here, was announced.

To quote from a recent press release: "Securing the Juno Awards has raised the profile of music, the arts and the city of Calgary. We want to leverage the excitement generated by the 2008 JUNO Awards to create a Legacy program that supports music in our community for years to come," says Terry Rock, Co-Chair, Calgary Host Committee. The legacy will focus on raising funds to support music for youth and education, and on providing career support resources for artists and other music professionals and the Aboriginal music community.

Harry Manx on Nine to Noon

(Click on pictures to see larger view)
Photos by Tracy Kolenchuk

Harry Manx has been called an essential link between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to. Blending Indian folk melodies with blues, a sprinkle of gospel, and compelling grooves, Manx's "mysticssippi" flavour is hard to resist, easy to digest and keeps audiences coming back for more.

Harry Manx joined host Lionel Rault on Nine to Noon, Friday, February 22nd for an interview and live performance. The Juno nominee's new CD, Harry Manx and Friends Live at the Glen Gould Studio, will be released in early March.

Joe Nolan on Alberta Morning

Photo: Tracy Kolenchuk

Although only 17 years old and having played guitar for just 5 years, Joe Nolan demonstrates an incredibly inspired potential for songwriting and performance. An impressive combination of technical guitar skill and a uniquely thoughtful perspective on topics of import, Joe says that his songs "usually involve some form of injustice, something wrong that hasn't been righted. I try to write about what's going on or what's happening around me, something people can relate to."

Sophie Milman on Nine to Noon

(Click on pictures to see larger view)

Jazz vocalist Sophie Milman was Lionel Rault's guest on Nine to Noon, Tuesday, December 11th. She was born in the U.S.S.R. just as the communist government was beginning to crumble. After emigrating from Russia in the early 1990s, Sophie, who is of Jewish heritage, spent most of her childhood years in Israel where she listened extensively to jazz. She and her family made their way to Canada almost 10 years later. She is now 24. "Even though it's been sort of a long and convoluted journey, I feel like Canada is finally home and I feel very, very good there," she said. "And I think all my life experiences have enriched my music in a way and made me culturally aware." So far, it seems to be paying off. Her self-titled debut album was released to critical acclaim in 2004 and her second album, Make Someone Happy, was released this past August and hit No. 4 on the Billboard Jazz Chart.

Since then, she has relocated to Winnipeg and recently resurfaced with a brand new album called Lovers Find Reasons.

Corb Lund on How I Hear It

On his fifth album, Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier! Corb Lund writes about warfare via something he knows about first hand: horses. It’s been almost a century since most of us pondered the cavalry’s integral role in military history. But as Lund points out on the globetrotting title track, you can still find traces of the cavalry in more contemporary conflicts.

The Alberta-based singer/songwriter dropped in on How I Hear It, Friday, November 30th for a live performance and to chat with host Monica Miller about the new album, which was recently featured as CKUA's CD of the Week.

Hayley Sales on How I Hear It

While it is true that everyone has a story, 20 year old Hayley Sales' experiences are so numerous and compelling that they almost sound fictional. The singer has a history that includes being born in the Washington D.C. projects, interviewing the Dalai Lama, travelling the world, accompanying former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic to the Seattle WTO protests, and self-penning and producing her major label debut album Sunseed, to be released internationally this year.

Hayley Sales was Monica Miller's guest on How I Hear It, Wednesday, November 14th for an interview and live performance.

Serena Ryder on Nine to Noon

Serena Ryder is just 23. But her voice, a deep, bluesy, soulful instrument that has drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, makes her sound much older. She also appears wise beyond her years, blessed with an intelligence and confidence that came across in her songs on Unlikely Emergency, her critically acclaimed independent album. Some might even call her an "old soul" who seems like she's been here before.

The singer/songwriter Billboard declared to be "Canada's Most Promising" was Lionel Rault's guest on Nine to Noon, Wednesday, November 7th for an interview and live performance.

Wil on How I Hear It

Wil's sophomore album, By December, embodies all of its charismatic creator's inherent dichotomies - an artistic triumph from a down-to-earth working man; a record purpose-built for the road by a guy who lives in the woods; a solo effort made with a massive cast; complex production resulting in straightforward songs; and archetypal love stories tinged with fear and doubt and, above all, yearning hope.

The Calgary based singer/songwriter dropped in on How I Hear It, Tuesday, November 6th to chat with host Monica Miller and to perform live.

Big Dave McLean & Doc MacLean on Natch'l Blues

Stony Plain Recording artist, Big Dave McLean is a veteran Prairie Blues artist who’s been playing his own brand of passionate blues since the early seventies. He’s influenced a generation of Prairie artists including Colin James and Wide Mouth Mason.

Doc MacLean is a weathered, wily, but infinitely likeable storyteller/performer. Writing from the dark side of the blues highway, Doc's distinctive vocals and bare fingers National guitar plot an intense, emotional remapping of contemporary Delta and roots music.

Holger Petersen welcomed Big Dave McLean and Doc MacLean to Natch'l Blues on Saturday, October 13th.

Sam Baker on Wide Cut Country

In his debut CD Mercy, Sam Baker reveals a poetic genius so straightforward and undemanding it evokes wonder. Baker is a vivid storyteller both in terms of what he chooses to write about and the brevity with which he brings his stories to life. The Austin singer-songwriter was Allison Brock's guest on Wide Cut Country, Saturday, September 15th. Sam Baker's latest CD Pretty World was recently featured as Allison's choice for CKUA's CD of the Week.

Martyn Joseph on How I Hear It

(Click on pictures to see larger view)

Britain's two leading contemporary music magazines, Q and MoJo, describe Martyn Joseph as having a depth, resonance and emotional punch, which belies comparisons, and as being an artist of enduring worth.

Martyn’s 20 year career has embraced some notable achievements including 5 Top 40 UK chart positions, but his particular strength is in the lyrical narrative of his songs, be they contemporary protests against injustice and inhumanity, a musical psalm to the fulfillment and fragilities of love, or a piercing précis of social history. His touring work and appearances over the years, on both sides of the Atlantic, have helped to establish this gifted and gracious Welshman as one of the foremost singer/songwriters of his generation.
